Many people experiencing hearing loss suffer
in silence because they are reluctant to do anything
about it. The list of problems associated with
hearing impairment is extensive and includes fatigue,
irritability, embarrassment, stress, depression,
avoidance of social activities, withdrawal from
personal relationships, rejection, danger to personal
safety, general health, loneliness, dissatisfaction
with life and unhappiness at work.
Hearing loss is particularly difficult to accept
when it occurs, usually later in life. After a
life-long ability to communicate, the barriers
imposed by hearing loss sometimes appear insurmountable.
People tend to avoid situations where they know
they cannot function and this can lead to isolation.
In some cases they may be able to hear snatches
of conversation but incorrectly, resulting in
them understanding little or nothing.
